Independent Project and The Cask of Amontillado

Hello Youngins,

Today we took care of two big things in class.

1. The Independent Reading Project

I handed out the IRP and spent quite a while talking about it. Make sure you have a copy of it and read it thoroughly. The most important thing right now is to find a book you want to read. We’ll be at the library Wednesday so, if you don’t have one by then, use the end of class to pick something out. The sooner you have something picked, the sooner you can run it by me for approval.

In case you lose it, here’s a copy of the project you can download at any time:

2. The Cask of Amontillado.

We read a rather difficult story by Edgar Allan Poe called The Cask of Amontillado and talked about how we use context to guess the meaning of words we don’t know. After reading the story, you were given a vocabulary sheet and told to take guesses at the meaning of the words. Next class we’ll take up the list and see how close you got. Good luck on your guesses and don’t worry if you had some trouble understanding the story. It was supposed to be hard.

In case you lose the story or the definition sheet, here they are:

Have a nice weekend and I’ll see you on Monday,
