Mr. Patterson's Blog

It's just like Facebook except it's boring, full of homework assignments and no fun to visit. Enjoy.

Sketch Comedy Writer’s Room

Hey Gang,

Now that we’ve spent a few days on sketch comedy, I want to give you a chance at writing some yourself.

We’re going to use the method used by all sketch comedy shows: Success through attrition.  i.e. Develop many ideas, write a few and perform one. Here’s the breakdown:

Day 1

A. I break you into writing groups. We’ll draw names from a hat..or box..or something.

B. Rough out 3 comedy sketches. I want you to experiment with at least 2 differnt comedy styles. Just a reminder of the styles we talked about last class.

  • I’m with Stupid
  • Inversion
  • Displacement
  • Anachronism
  • Parody
  • Exaggeration
  • Escalation
  • Repetition

C. Run your three ideas by Mr. Patterson. Together, you’ll reach a consensus of which 2 out of the three sketches has the best ‘legs’.

Day 2

A. Start writing your 2 best sketches. Try out different jokes and ideas.

B. By the end of the day you should have 2 working scripts.

C. Homework: Get these typed up all nice. They will be handed into Mr. Patterson

Day 3

A. Make a decision which of your two sketches you will perform.

B. Rehearsal

C. More rehearsal

D. Lots of rehearsal

Day 4

A. Performance Day.

B. Hand in both scripts to Mr. Patterson and perform one of them for the class.
